Why start the island day in Sorrento

Sorrento sits on a high cliff at the center of its peninsula, with the beaches of Marina Piccola and Marina Grande and the ports at its feet. From the Villa Comunale a lift goes down to Marina Piccola and the port.2 For a stay on this coast, that makes the town a practical base for a day on the water. Hotels in the center are a short walk or a lift ride from the harbor, and a boat that picks you up saves even that.

A private boat tour from Sorrento to Capri adds something a ferry cannot: the stretch in between. The boat follows the peninsula toward Punta Campanella, the headland that points straight at Capri, with a protected marine area around it.1 The cliffs, watchtowers and coves along the way would be a fine outing on their own.

Getting to Sorrento is easy too. The Circumvesuviana train runs there from Naples, and from the station a short walk brings you into the center.3 If you are based in Naples, a Sorrento departure can still work, though a boat that leaves straight from Naples saves you the train and is covered in our guide to that departure.

Its stops are the Blue Grotto, the Green Grotto, Marina Piccola, the Faraglioni, Anacapri and the Punta Carena lighthouse. Read the details that matter for a private day: the guide's languages, whether pickup is included or only available, whether drinks are on board and how the day ends. Several of these listings start from more than one place, so confirm where your boat leaves from. Meeting time and departure time are not the same thing, and the confirmation states both.

The crossing past Punta Campanella

The sea around Punta Campanella is rarely calm, as currents from the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno meet there.16 On a fine summer morning you may not notice; on a windier day the boat slows down and you feel the swell. A good skipper reads that water and picks the sheltered side of the island for the swim stops.

The headland itself has a long story. Legend says Ulysses built a sanctuary to Minerva here after meeting the sirens Leucosia, Partenope and Ligeia, and the remains of a Saracen tower stand on the summit.17 About fifty underwater caves have been identified along this peninsula.18 From the boat you see the mouths of some of them at the waterline.

Inside the protected area the rules are strict for small motor craft: no faster than 5 knots within 300 metres of the coast and 10 knots beyond it in zone B.19 Zone A is a full reserve, closed to any activity that could harm the marine environment.20 Expect parts of this coast to pass slowly, and at a distance.

Shared and small-group boats from Sorrento

If a private day is more than you want to spend, Sorrento also has busy shared departures. A Capri boat tour from Sorrento with optional Blue Grotto runs 4 to 8 hours and starts from $130, rated 4.76 from 3,070 reviews. Another, with pickup included and a choice of private or small groups, starts from $141.

That second listing is rated 4.78 from 4,980 reviews and runs 5 to 8 hours. A third trip with transfer runs 5 to 7 hours, has a live guide in Italian, English, French and Spanish and is rated 4.91 from 1,864 reviews, from $126. All of them give you free time on the island as well as the boat ride.

The trade-off is the same as on Capri itself: a shared boat follows its own timetable, and a private one follows yours. On a shared day the free time ashore is often the longest part; on a private boat you can stay on the water instead and keep swimming. Decide first whether you want the island's streets or its sea. If it is the streets, a shared day is the better buy; if it is coves, caves and long swims, the private boat earns its price.

Planning the day from Sorrento

Sorrento's coastal climate makes a visit possible at any time of year, but the sea is another matter.21 In the warm months a full day with swim stops makes the most sense. Outside them, check the forecast the evening before, keep your free cancellation window in mind and have a second day free if the sea turns rough.

Pack for a full day on deck: a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and beachwear, plus a light layer for the ride back. Bring money for the Blue Grotto if your boat stops there, since the ticket is usually paid on the spot and the visit depends on the tides and the weather.22 Water shoes help on the rocky swim stops.

Finally, keep the evening open. A long day on the water leaves you tired and salty, and the walk from the port back up to the center is steep. The lift from Marina Piccola to the Villa Comunale saves the climb.2 Dinner in the old town, after a day out at sea, is one of the better rewards Sorrento has to offer.

Who should book a private boat from Sorrento

A private boat from Sorrento suits travelers who want the whole day at sea rather than an island visit with a boat ride attached. Couples on a special trip, families with children who want to swim when they like, and friends who want to set their own pace all get more from a boat that answers only to them.

It also suits travelers who dislike crowds. On a private boat you can skip a busy cave, linger at a quiet one and choose your swim stop with the skipper. The listing we book names skip-the-line access through an express security check, which helps at busy moments.

A shared day remains the better choice if your main wish is to walk the island's lanes and see the Piazzetta. The shared listings from Sorrento combine the boat with free time ashore at a fraction of the price. Decide what the day is for, and the right boat follows from that.
