How boat prices on Capri are built

A Capri boat tour price depends on four things: who shares the boat, how long you are out, where you start and what is included. A short shared trip from Marina Grande sits at the bottom of the range, and a private day from the mainland at the top. Everything else falls in between, and the listing's own terms explain the difference.

Shared and small-group listings sell places on a boat with other travelers. Private listings book the boat for your party alone, and that is where reading carefully matters most. The private listings on this site do not say whether their from-price covers the whole boat or each guest. Set your group size on the booking page and read the total before you pay.

Every price on this page is a from-price, the lowest starting price the listing shows. Your date, your group size and the options you choose can move it up. Treat the figures here as a guide to the range, and the booking page as the final word on what your day will cost.

Shared and small-group boats: the low end

The cheapest way onto the water is a shared island trip. One runs for 1 to 2 hours from Marina Grande past the Faraglioni and the lighthouse, from $29, and is rated 4.32 from 5,658 reviews. Another adds a Blue Grotto stop and lasts 1.5 hours, from $29.

A little more buys a smaller group. A 2-hour tour of the grottoes with a swim and limoncello is limited to 10 participants and starts from $58. A 2-hour tour with caves, a swim, a snack and limoncello starts from $75 and is rated 4.70 from 701 reviews. Both still keep to a set route and timetable.

Longer shared days cost more and include the crossing from the mainland. A Capri day from Sorrento with an optional Blue Grotto runs 4 to 8 hours from $130. From Naples, a 9-hour day with pickup starts from $102. Remember that the Blue Grotto ticket, where the stop is offered, is usually a separate cost.

The Capri private boat tour price

The Capri private boat tour price can start lower than you might expect for a short trip from the island itself. A private island tour of 2 to 3 hours with snorkeling and swimming starts from $194 and is rated 4.87 from 45 reviews. A private 2-hour boat starts from $236, and a half-day private boat of 4 hours from $328.

The private boat this site books takes 3 hours from Marina Grande and starts from $461. Its price includes the skipper, fuel, landing fees, soft drinks and towels; the Blue Grotto ticket is extra and paid on the spot. A private tour with the Faraglioni and sea caves runs 2 to 6 hours from $416.

From the mainland the private days are longer, and their from-prices are higher. From Sorrento a 7-hour private trip starts from $520, from Amalfi a 6-hour day from $1,301, and from Naples a 6-hour excursion from $2,751. A yacht day to Capri and Positano starts from $2,601.

The Capri boat tour cost beyond the ticket

The Capri boat tour cost is more than the boat. Add the Blue Grotto ticket for each person who goes in, if the grotto is open and you choose to visit; on the private boat we book it is excluded and paid on the spot. Add the ferry to Capri if you are staying on the mainland and your boat starts on the island.

Food and drink vary by listing. Our private boat includes soft drinks and towels; other listings include drinks, snacks, limoncello, a light lunch or an aperitif. A gozzo tour with an aperitif, a private boat with pizza and beer, a small-group day with lunch: compare what each one includes before you compare prices.

Then there is the day around the boat. Getting to Marina Grande, the cable car up to the Piazzetta, lunch on the island and any museum or chairlift ticket all add up. The cable car climbs from the port to the Piazzetta.1 Budget for the whole day, not just the hours on the water, and the boat price will feel easier to judge.

How to compare a private boat with shared seats

The fair comparison is total against total. On the booking page of a private listing, set the number of people in your party and note the total. Then work out the cost of the same number of places on a shared or small-group boat, and add the Blue Grotto tickets to both if you plan to go in.

For a couple, a shared trip is usually far cheaper. With a larger party, the gap can narrow, depending on how the private listing prices your group. That is why the total on the booking page is the only figure that counts; no rule of thumb replaces it.

Then weigh what the money buys. On a private boat you choose the stops, skip the queues you do not want and swim where you like, with only your party on board. On a shared boat you get the coast at a fraction of the price, on someone else's timetable. Neither is wrong; they are simply different days.

Prices by starting point

Where you start shapes the price as much as the type of boat. On Capri itself, at Marina Grande, the boats only have to cover the island's coast, and the private ones start from $194 for 2 to 3 hours. If you are staying on the island or arrive on an early ferry, this is where your money buys the most time at the caves and stacks.

From Sorrento and Positano the boat crosses open water first. A shared Capri day from Sorrento starts from $130, and a small-group day from Positano with lunch from $178. The private days from these towns run 4 to 8 hours and cost several times more than a short private boat on the island.

From Naples the shared days are surprisingly affordable for their length: a 9-hour day with pickup starts from $102. A private boat from the city, on the other hand, sits at the very top of the range. If your budget is tight and your base is Naples, the shared day is the sensible choice; if you want a private boat, consider a night on Capri or in Sorrento first.

Getting good value for your money

Value is not the lowest price. A 4.87 rating from 45 reviews on a private 2-to-3-hour boat says more than a perfect score from 4 reviews. Look at the rating breakdown too: the private boat we book scores 4.7 for value for money and 4.9 for the guide. A shared trip with a 4.1 for value is cheaper but not always better value.

Use the free cancellation window. Every boat listed here lets you cancel for nothing until 24 hours out, so booking early does not lock you in if the sea turns. In summer, book early; reserve now, pay later keeps your money in your pocket until the day draws near.

Finally, think about length. Paying for a longer boat only makes sense if you will use the time. Three hours on a private boat from Marina Grande covers the coast, the caves and a swim. A full day from the mainland adds the crossing and costs much more; it makes sense when you are staying on the coast and want the whole day at sea.
